Inside Job
October 19, 2011

From Academy Award nominated filmmaker, Charles Ferguson comes Inside Job, the first film to expose the shocking truth behind the economic crisis of 2008. The global financial meltdown, at a cost of over $20 million, resulted in millions of people losing their homes and jobs. Through extensive research and interviews with the major financial insiders, politicians and journalists, Inside Job traces the rise of a rogue industry and unveils the corrosive relationships corrupting politics, regulation and academia. Narrated by Academy Award winner Matt Damon.  www.sonyclassics.com/inside job

Food Matters
November 16, 2011
Music: Pete Eastmuire
“Let thy Food be thy Medicine and thy Medicine be thy Food” – Hippocrates.  That is the message from the founding father of modern medicine echoed in the controversial new documentary film Food Matters from Producer-Directors James Colquhoun and Laurentine ten Bosch. The focus of the film is in helping us rethink the belief systems fed to us by our modern medical and health care establishments. The interviewees point out that not every problem requires costly, major medical attention and reveal many alternative therapies that can be more effective, more economical, less harmful and less invasive than conventional medical treatments.  www.foodmatters.tv

Gasland
January 18, 2012
Music: Romney Getty & Aaron Garner
Gasland examines “the largest domestic natural gas drilling boom in history” that has swept across the United States. The Halliburton -developed drilling technology of “fracking” or hydraulic fracturing has unlocked a “Saudia Arabia of natural gas” just beneath us. But is fracking safe? When filmmaker Josh Fox is asked to lease his land for drilling, he embarks on a cross-country odyssey uncovering a trail of secrets, lies and contamination. A recently drilled nearby Pennsylvania town reports that residents are able to light their drinking water on fire. This is just one of the many absurd and astonishing revelations of a new country called Gasland. Part verite travelogue, part expose, part mystery, part bluegrass banjo meltdown, part showdown.  http://www.gaslandthemovie.com

The Economics of Happiness
February 15, 2012

The Economics of Happiness describes a world moving simultaneously in two opposing directions. On the one hand, government and big business continue to promote globalization and the consolidation of corporate power. At the same time, all around the world people are resisting those policies, demanding a re-regulation of trade and finance – and, far from the old institutions of power, they’re starting to forge a very different future. Communities are coming together to re-build more human scale, ecological economies based on a new paradigm –  an economics of localization.  www.theeconomicsofhappiness.org

The Story of Bottled Water & the Story of Cosmetics

March 14, 2012 LIVE AUCTION fundraiser
Music: Strange Potatoes
The Story of Bottled Water & The Story of Cosmetics are both part of the Story of Stuff Project created by Annie Leonard as her response to spending nearly two decades investigating and organizing on environmental health and justice issues. She has traveled to 40 countries, visiting literally hundreds of factories where our stuff is made and dumps where our stuff is dumped. Witnessing first hand the horrendous impacts of both over and under consumption around the world, Annie is fiercely dedicated to reclaiming and transforming our industrial and economic systems so they serve, rather than undermine, ecological sustainability and social equity. http://www.storyofstuff.com

In celebration of Earth Day we will be hosting an afternoon film for the schools within walking distance to the theatre on a first signed up first seated basis. The film will be the Clean Bin Project and as an extra bonus the Green Team kids from Cameron Street School will be performing special environmental songs that won them the Lieutenants Governors Natural Youth Heritage award several years back.  They will be performing for both the afternoon and evenings screenings. Please contact lisa [Email address: lisa #AT# elephantthoughts.com - replace #AT# with @ ] if you would like your class to attend. Fee for each student is a $2. Popcorn will be for sale. Proceeds help support our local environmental education programs in the schools.

GREEN BEER FOR A GREEN PLANET!  LIVE AUCTION FUNDRAISER – MARCH 14TH

In the spirit of St. Patrick’s day, we again celebrate with a live auction and green refreshments prior to the film. Last year’s evening was a great success and raised over $4,500 in support of Elephant Thoughts and the Blue Mountain Watershed Trust’s delivery of local environmental programs in schools. These hands-on workshops encourage the conservation of our ecologically sensitive wetlands, the promotion of alternative energy choices and the ability to make informed decisions on living in a way to protect our planet for future generations. Taught by skilled teachers, students participate in a number of interactive science-based activities, such as building solar cars, generating electricity using bikes, interacting with live native animals and using models to simulate the effects of pollution on the watershed system.

We believe that the future of this planet depends on our children, and therefore promote their active involvement in this series. Students are free and we encourage their volunteerism as much as possible.

Waste Land
Music:  Foxfarm
Filmed over nearly three years, Waste Land follows renowned artist Vik Muniz as he journeys from his home base in Brooklyn to his native Brazil and the world’s largest garbage dump, Jardim Gramacho, located on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. There he photographs an eclectic band of “catadores” – self-designated pickers of recyclable materials. Muniz’s collaboration with these inspiring characters as they recreate photographic images of themselves out of garbage reveals both the dignity and despair of the catadores as they begin to re-imagine their lives. Director Lucy Walker (Devil’s Playground and Countdown to Zero) and co-directors Joao Jardim and Karen Harley have great access to the entire process and, in the end, offer stirring evidence of the transformative power of art and the alchemy of the human spirit. http://www.wastelandmovie.com
