First Nations and Inuit School Support
Supporting the development of excellence in education, connecting communities to the educational program, ensuring that education is culturally relevant.
Elephant Thoughts has been working in northern Canada since 2002. Since then, we’ve become a force for change in First Nations education. We have quickly expanded to become Canada’s largest science outreach program to northern schools, visiting as many as 100 native communities per year. We even have full-time staff in a number of communities and have won many of Canada’s top awards in education for our First Nations and Inuit education programs.
Teaching Communities To Fish
As the saying goes, ‘Give a man a fish and he’ll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he’ll eat for a lifetime.’ In every program we conduct, Elephant Thoughts strives to develop the local educational team’s capacity to deliver an ongoing effective program. We do that by offering teacher training alongside our workshops to students. We leave behind resources, and we give teachers the tools that they can use to amplify the effectiveness of our time in the community by continuing the learning. Our work in First Nation and Inuit communities help schools develop programs that combat low graduation rates, improve school attendance and apathy issues, and motivative the greater community to participate in education. We deliver some of the most exciting programs in the country. We write curriculum and teaching documents that are specific, relevant, and achievable for a community. We even teach administrators how to find dollars and write grants to bring in support programs when needed. We leave behind expertise since we hire and train locally whenever possible.
When you work with Elephant Thoughts, you become a partner. Our goal is your success. For years to come we bring additional funds to the table when we can secure them, offer you resources and support, build on the relationship, be a problem solver when you need it, and basically become a life-long friend in education. We’re here to make your community stronger—educated, fulfilled, happy children is our only end goal!
All of our work with First Nations and Inuit is strictly not-for-profit. Let us know how we can help with education in your community. Contact us at 705-444-2012 or email us.
Why Elephant Thoughts?
Elephant Thoughts has been working in northern Canada since 2002. We are now Canada’s largest science outreach program to northern schools and visit as many as 100 native communities per year. We’ve done so well because our programs work; word gets around! We teach and motivate students in an exciting manner developed to combat apathy and develop a love of learning. We help schools and teachers to better engage students and the community at large. In the places we are active there are more graduates, many of whom are college-bound. We employ a large number of excellent Native educators and train others. We excite every community we visit about the learning process and design programs that involve parents and the greater community, further connecting community and education in a positive way.
First Nations and Inuit communities face a variety of challenges in providing effective educational programs. But challenge or no challenge, every student deserves a chance at an excellent education. Elephant Thoughts professional educators meet the challenges you face by bringing together deep knowledge in First Nations methodology, special needs, and specific disciplines. We recognize that in order to have academic success you must holistically work with a student to develop confidence, pride in identity, and social and emotional skills. After working for so many years with First Nations and Inuit children we understand their amazing strengths and develop programs that capitalize on those strengths rather than aim squarely at their weaknesses. We combine indigenous culture, academics and exploration in unique, compelling ways—by engaging elders in the educational process, for example. It’s an approach that helps build self esteem and gives students the skills and courage to chase their dreams.
Science Workshops In First Nation Schools
Elephant Thoughts has the most sophisticated and effective science and technology outreach program in Canada. This is education at its best! We are creating huge interest with interactive workshops and the best equipment ever, with tons of core curriculum built in.
Our Science Workshops are a thrilling combination of hands-on activities and demonstrations involving unique equipment. Other companies arrive with a few boxes; we arrive with a truck. From our 4,200 square foot Endangered Species module, to the tools and machines that students build in our Renewable Energy module, to our planetarium in which we discover First Nations constellations, programs are built big, bold and with cultural relevance in mind.
We are teachers, so even though the programs are science-based we won’t miss the chance to develop literacy, critical thinking, and creativity skills.
Since Elephant Thoughts is not-for-profit, you get the best programming and the best value available. Everything is grade-specific, which means that we have programs built around every age, from Kindergarten to grade 12. We also tailor each program to suit your specific needs such as: number of students and their age range, your programming preferences, and program duration (programs typically run from one to three weeks). We’ll suggest science programming that’s custom-designed for your school.
The coolest equipment, award-winning programming, greatest value. What are you waiting for? Elephant Thoughts has tons of experience across Canada —we visit more First Nations communities than anyone else, up to 100 per year. Connect with us to find out more. Call 705-444-2012 or email us.
Canadian students experience the positive feelings that come from raising funds for those in greatest need, but still don’t understand the issues surrounding the developing world. Watoto Learn creates that understanding while shaping children to become compassionate global citizens. Watoto Learn is Elephant Thoughts’ answer to a traditional school fundraiser. The heart of the program is a unique online portal. It opens up a safe, secure forum for children from all over to dialogue on issues of international sustainability. It makes use of voice thread technology, enabling children to post sound and video, to listen and watch and learn.
Online workshops + fundraising = global insight
All fundraising classes are supplied with a series of online workshops that provide students with incredible insight into the global community and the cause they are fundraising for. The workshops are built around the Ontario curriculum (media literacy strand), which is useful for teachers, too.
Online workshops use simulation activities, documentaries, class discussion, and professional quality film to allow students to explore international development issues while fostering compassion and empathy for people and cultures all over the globe. At the same time, students select and fundraise for a project of their choice, making a real difference in the lives of children in the developing world.
Watoto Learn program advantages:
Students are connected directly to the project, with progress reports and the option to correspond
Students don’t just fundraise; they learn about developing world issues
Elephant Thoughts takes as much of the work off the teacher’s plate as possible; from methodology to fundraising, we make it easy
We provide teachers with assessment tools for each workshop (checklists, rubrics, anecdotal record sheets)
We help you to help children around the world who really need it!
NOTE: This program is offered free of charge to any school that would like to raise money while at the same time educating North American school children about the developing world.
After school programs
Our After School Programs are second to none. For grades 1 to 5, this program is filled with whiz, bam, boom science fun. The program kicks off with an absolutely free one hour science show for the entire school followed by 5 weeks of hands-on science workshops for registered participants. It’s a great way to strengthen curriculum-linked science skills, build confidence, and bring a level of science education to the school that schools could not afford on their own.
Program activities include: owl pellet dissection, slime making, gummi worms, snow making, water crystals, shrinky dinks, cold front water tanks, bird whistles, rain forest seed activity, touch and see squares, and exciting demos. There are lots of creations to take home each week!
Cost of the program is $49 for the entire 5 weeks and for every 9 students registered, Elephant Thoughts will sponsor one student to attend for free.
100% of profits support our work in international schools – a huge win/win! To find out more or to book your After School Program,

In-school field trips
Why spend hours on a bus when we can bring you the highest quality, most exciting full day science programs available? Less than the cost of field trips, and more fun thanks to our fully hands-on activities. It’s like bringing the science center to you! During the program, hands-on activities and exciting demonstrations will touch on expectations from all four strands of the Ontario Science Curriculum. The entire year of science will be summarized and emphasized in an exciting manner. At the same time the program will cultivate higher level thinking skills like critical thinking and problem solving as well as developing creativity, curiosity, and scientific vocabulary.
In a program like this, kids do more, learn more, are inspired more, and all at a portion of the cost.
