DIVERSITY IN EDUCATION

Right from our humble beginnings, Elephant Thoughts has endeavoured to become educators of excellence. We actively recruit the strongest candidates we meet to become part of the team. We seek diversity of thought, styles, and expertise. We ensure we have representation on our education team of the ethnicities and life experiences of the youth we serve.

Diversity strengthens our impact and competency in the classroom and using this tool we are able to support schools in a variety of areas. Our goal is to work alongside schools supporting them in areas they identify and need, in hopes of strengthening their education programs.

Elephant Thoughts reserves its support to under resourced schools. The majority of those are Indigenous schools across Canada. We visit approximately 100 Northern Indigenous schools per year. Our in-school programs range from one week to a full-year presence in the school.

Plug holes in existing programs (lack of specialist teachers)

Provide extra-curricular programming particularly in stem fields

STEM SUPPORTS FOR REMOTE SCHOOLS

Very organically Elephant Thoughts became a large, national, deliverer of STEM related programming across Northern Canada. This was a result of requests from Northern Principals to help their schools stay at par offering digital programming to their students. As such Elephant Thoughts has been developing effective curriculum in digital media and bringing it to over 10,000 kids annually.

Our belief is that by supporting youth from remote communities, they will move on to post-secondary training and return to their communities as the ChangeMakers of tomorrow. They will build their own professional careers as teachers, nurses, doctors, administrators, accountants, artists, writers and others…

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING…

Elephant Thoughts coding and robotics workshops demystified the world of computing science while teaching our students that coding is simply a language that allows computers to communicate. Students, staff, and Elders engaged in activities such as exploring the use of distance, light, and colour sensors as part of the coding process and learned to code their own robots! The smiles, laughter, and engagement from all participants were not a metric we captured, but they should have been because they were palpable. ~Teacher

Initially entered the last cohort with a lack of confidence, struggling with collaboration and communication with others. His innate shyness hindered his active participation within the group. However, as Drew delved deeper into the realm of design, his transformation was remarkable. Within a few weeks, he began to flourish, gaining the skills and confidence to independently tackle real-world design projects. – Teacher
