Indigenous Science Internships for Youth and Teachers

Supporting the Next Generation

of Science Teachers

Elephant Thoughts does not want to be the keeper of knowledge, we want to share all we know with our colleagues, those current and future teachers.  As such we have designed two programs that are supporting the development of quality science education in communities.  In each instance we share all the best practices we have learned from other teachers over the years and support teachers on how to continue developing and funding their work indefinitely.

Environmental Science Internships for Youth

In partnership with communities, and our supporters the National Science and Engineering Research Council, and the Ontario Trillium Foundation, Elephant Thoughts is prepping a new generation of environmentalists and teachers. Our summer internships start with a select group of students learning basic environmental science from tree identification, to water testing, to biodiversity plotting, mapping, and more.  Students advance through more sophisticated technical skills including learning project management and how to apply for funds for their environmental remediation projects. Internships culminate in an experience where the students now become teachers as they run environmental science camps for younger children

in the community.

Science Teaching Professional Development

for Teachers and Educational Assistants

Science teaching has to easily be one of the most fun subjects to teach.  Where else are you allowed to have snakes in the classroom, play with robots, handle dinosaur bones, make minor explosions, and quite frankly have a messy, whiz, bam, boom time.  All the while your students love you for it and you become satisfied you are inspiring young minds, teaching them to be creative, teaching them to be good critical thinkers.  It is a teachers dream and we love to show other teachers how to do it.

When Elephant Thoughts is engaged by a school, we always offer a free professional development workshop for teachers where we help to demonstrate how to make science effective, fun and relevant in the classroom.  When we are in a community for four weeks or more, we always try to hire local educators to work alongside us and teach them all we know.  That works for teachers, educational assistants and high school graduates that are considering pursuing and education degree.  Our goal is to significantly impact the quantity and quality of the science programs being taught to children and youth.  The outcomes for doing so include a more engaging education program which aides in improved student attendance, student grades, and eventually graduates and students going on to post secondary.  Science is one of the best educational tools we have found to combat apathy in education, to teach critical thinking, to connect parents to the education system and to develop strong, motivated students.
